Sullivan County, NY – The Matthew R. Bertholf Scholarship Fund was recently created within the Community Foundation to award scholarships to graduating seniors of the Tri-Valley Central School District who plan to continue their education in the fields of trades or applied technology. The fund was established in honor and memory of Matthew R. Bertholf who passed away at the age of 30 in December 2012. This Fund was established to honor and remember a remarkable young man, Matthew ‘Matty’ Bertholf, who was the epitome of what it meant to live in and embrace Sullivan County. A resident of Grahamsville, Matty was avid in the trades and applied technology, skilled with his hands, a dexterous builder, woodworker and mason. Through this scholarship, Matty’s legacy will be carried on through a student who plans to pursue the trades and mirrors the characteristics of Matthew Bertholf. An annual scholarship of $1000, or two scholarships of $500 each will be awarded. The Community Foundation manages charitable funds and handles all of the fiscal reporting and administration for each charitable fund under its umbrella, thereby keeping administration costs much lower than a private foundation, and allowing more dollars to flow toward grants and scholarships.
The lunchtime keynote speaker, Greg Berman, director of the Center for Court Innovation and recipient of the National Peter F. Drucker Award for Non-profit Innovation inspired attendees with “Lessons from the Front Lines of Innovation.” He stressed that fear of failure can often result in organizations becoming static and not moving forward. He urged them to see failure as part of the learning process and a necessary step on the road to success. Sullivan County District Attorney, James Farrell, attended the Summit to hear Berman’s presentation.

The Winning Team

One of the day’s highlights was the presentation of the first Nonprofit Innovation Award. Three finalists were each given an opportunity to present their projects to the Summit audience and panel of judges. The Community Reporting Alliance, a youth-run community newspaper from Livingston Manor walked away with the $5,000 first place prize award. The two runners up, Crystal Run Village and Rural & Migrant Ministries, each received $500 awards.

Throughout the day, summit attendees were offered professional workshops on organizational assessment tools, social media myths, succession planning and recruiting volunteers. The day concluded with a speed networking reception, giving participants an additional chance to get to know their nonprofit colleagues and seek collaboration opportunities. “Networking is a very important part of the event,” noted event co-chair Linda Hartley. “Building cooperation and trust among our local nonprofits is the first step to fostering collaboration.”

Aaron Horowitz, and Dr.Kumar, principals of Eustance & Horowitz, an engineering firm in Circleville, established the Eustance & Horowitz Charitable Foundation in 2006 as a donor advised fund of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan. It was established to respond to community needs. Karen VanHouten Minogue, Executive Director of the Community Foundation, said “We are very proud to facilitate this charitable foundation under our umbrella, and it is especially gratifying to assist the representatives of the Eustance & Horowitz Charitable Foundation in making their first meaningful grant.”

Mr. Horowitz added, “The Alzheimer’s Association provides such valuable assistance and support. Both my father and father-in-law suffer with Alzheimer’s, and although we know there is no cure yet, we do know that the Alzheimer’s Association is the trusted resource for reliable information, education, referral, and support to millions of people affected by the disease, and those family members who care for them.” Dr. Kumar added, “It is truly wonderful that researchers have been working tirelessly to uncover as many aspects of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias as possible. We are so pleased to make this grant to the Alzheimer’s Association with the help of the Community Foundation.”

The Community Foundation manages 145 charitable funds and handles all of the fiscal reporting and administration for each charitable fund under its umbrella, thereby keeping administration costs much lower than a private foundation, and allowing more dollars to flow toward grants and scholarships. Secure donations may be made on-line to any charitable fund at www.cfoc-ny.org. The Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All gifts are tax deductible under current tax laws.

“We are very excited to now be teaming up with the Community Foundation,” said Elissa’s father, Steven Lippen. “With the help of the Community Foundation, we will be able to award more scholarships in honor of our daughter and her friend Matthew,” Jessica Lippen, Elissa’s mother added, “and their names will live on forever.”

Montgomery, NY – The Jodi’s Drive Scholarship Fund was recently created within the Community Foundation to award scholarships to graduating seniors at Warwick Valley High School. The Fund was established in honor and memory of Jodi-Ann Denmead who passed away at the age of 47 in 2009 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. This Fund was established by family and friends of Jodi-Ann Denmead, a loving wife and proud mother, dedicated community volunteer, and an avid sports fan. Jodi’s “drive” to make the world a better place through her support of many community initiatives will be celebrated and honored through the scholarships that will be awarded from this fund. In November 2012, friends and families gathered at Chateau Hathorn in Warwick to hold a fundraising event for the scholarship fund. Almost $9,000 was raised for The Jodi’s Drive Scholarship Fund. An annual event is planned for October 2013 and each successive October tied to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to raise awareness for The Jodi’s Drive Scholarship Fund and the scholarships it awards. Through the scholarship fund, at least $500 will be awarded annually to a graduating Warwick Valley High School senior who has volunteered in the community each school [...]

Through the scholarship fund, at least $500 will be awarded annually to a graduating Warwick Valley High School senior who has volunteered in the community each school year at least 10 hours per week while school is in session, maintained at least an 80% average in all classes, and been involved in at least two different school teams, clubs or other school-related activities each school year. An essay is also required. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is April 2, 2013 in the Guidance Office of Warwick Valley High School.

The Community Foundation manages charitable funds and handles all of the fiscal reporting and administration for each charitable fund under its umbrella, thereby keeping administration costs much lower than a private foundation, and allowing more dollars to flow toward grants and scholarships. “We are honored to administer this charitable fund on behalf of the Denmead family to benefit graduating students of Warwick Valley High School who emulate Jodi-Ann’s values and love for her community,” said Karen VanHouten Minogue, Executive Director of the Community Foundation.

Contributions to The Jodi’s Drive Scholarship Fund may be made to CFOS-The Jodi’s Drive Scholarship Fund and sent to the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan, 30 Scott’s Corners Drive, Suite 202, Montgomery, NY 12549. Donations may also be made on-line at www.cfoc-ny.org. The Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All gifts are tax deductible under current tax laws.
